Five tips for raising resilient teens

As parents, we are so focused on keeping our children safe and protecting them from all the bad in this world. What we fail to realize in doing this, however, is that we are shielding our children from learning opportunities that will help them grow and establish their own identities.

With that in mind, here are my five tips for raising resilient teens:

  • Remind your teen that they are not alone- Oftentimes, our children are too afraid to speak to us, or they keep secrets because they think that you do not understand, you will disagree with their decisions, or you will be disappointed in them. By going out of your way to remind your child that they are not alone, you are encouraging them to speak up and making way for better communication.

  •  Encourage your teen to try new things and take risks- We are so used to the routines we have established in our daily schedules that we become comfortable doing the same things every day. By encouraging your child to take risks and try new things, you are pushing them to step out of their comfort zone and develop their knowledge and skills in a way that can only be done through experience.
  • Allow your teen to make their own decisions- We often try to push our teens in the direction that we think is best for them, but this may not always be the case. They are their person and must learn what is best for them, which means as a parent, you need to step back and allow them to make their own decisions, even if it may not be the right decision. You make it clear that you are still there to make sure they are safe throughout the process and will be there to provide guidance and support.
  • Exemplify how learning never stops- No matter how old, your children will learn from what you do, so set yourself as an example and go through the process of taking risks with them. By showing your teen that even as an adult, you are still learning and facing new challenges, they will feel better about not knowing everything and learning along the way.
  • Celebrate the successes and grow from the mistakes- Your teen is not alone in this; you know their decisions affect you just as much as them. Be happy for their successes and celebrate alongside them, but don’t forget that there is always something to learn and celebrate in mistakes as well. Be conscious about your words and actions when your teen is at a lower point because those moments will help them to move forward and keep going.

The importance of putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation

With so much change and uncertainty in this world around us, it is normal to look for comfort in our daily routines and activities. If you prefer to stay in your comfort zone and stick to the same schedule daily, this post is for you.

Putting yourself out into the world in an uncomfortable or new situation means you must first embrace vulnerability and accept that you are setting out to do something outside of what you are used to. This takes immense courage, but in doing so, you are setting yourself up for success and creating space for new opportunities to surface that you were otherwise closed to.

As a teenager especially, you are at a stage in your life where you are trying to understand your values, beliefs, and morals. Having been brought up with the ideals of your parents, family, and community, it is easy to get lost in trying to decide where you stand. Only by branching out and actively putting yourself in different environments and situations will you learn what you do and do not agree with.

Being comfortable means living in a bubble; we cannot grow if we allow ourselves to spend all our time in that bubble. With that in mind, remember that you are only hurting yourself the next time you decide to skip out on trying something new and that you never know what valuable skills, knowledge, and experiences you could gain from permitting yourself to embrace discomfort for a bit.
