How to keep a positive mindset

I have talked a lot about the importance of having a positive mindset and how it impacts our daily interactions with ourselves and others. While it does come more naturally for some, anyone can develop a more positive mentality. Today I wanted to share a few tips on how to maintain a positive attitude.

1. Surround yourself with positive people. If you are like me, it is very easy to be influenced by others' emotions. One way to protect yourself from negativity is to simply distance yourself from people who you think do not contribute positively to your mentality and growth.

2. Begin your day with a smile and positive thoughts. I always say how you begin your morning will set the tone for the rest of the day, so make sure you are doing your best to have a positive attitude about what you are going to accomplish that day. Keep this going throughout your day as well!

3. Focus on all that you are capable of and be compassionate to yourself. It is so important to treat yourself with kindness and focus on your strengths rather than weaknesses. While setting goals is important, grant yourself grace and reward yourself for the small steps you take to reach your goals on the days that you cannot accomplish everything you set out to do.

4. Self-reflect and generate a list of things you are grateful for daily. Writing down what you are grateful for is a wonderful way to focus on the positive aspects of your day-to-day life. It reminds you of all that you have and can pull you out of your negativity.

5. Look to others for support rather than as competition. Practice learning from those around you rather than trying to be better than them. This will allow you to become a better version of yourself as well as create a more positive community.

With these small tips, you can improve your well-being and increase your success in whatever you set out to accomplish.

Five tips for raising resilient teens

As parents, we are so focused on keeping our children safe and protecting them from all the bad in this world. What we fail to realize in doing this, however, is that we are shielding our children from learning opportunities that will help them grow and establish their own identities.

With that in mind, here are my five tips for raising resilient teens:

1. Remind your teen that they are not alone- Oftentimes, our children are too afraid to speak to us, or they keep secrets because they think that you do not understand, you will disagree with their decisions, or you will be disappointed in them. By going out of your way to remind your child that they are not alone, you are encouraging them to speak up and making way for better communication.

2. Encourage your teen to try new things and take risks- We are so used to the routines we have established in our daily schedules that we become comfortable doing the same things every day. By encouraging your child to take risks and try new things, you are pushing them to step out of their comfort zone and develop their knowledge and skills in a way that can only be done through experience.

3. Allow your teen to make their own decisions- We often try to push our teens in the direction that we think is best for them, but this may not always be the case. They are their own person and must learn what is best for them, which means as a parent, you need to step back and allow them to make their own decisions, even if it may not be the right decision. You make it clear that you are still there to make sure they are safe throughout the process and will be there to provide guidance and support.

4. Exemplify how learning never stops- No matter how old, your children will learn from what you do, so set yourself as an example and go through the process of taking risks with them. By showing your teen that even as an adult, you are still learning and facing new challenges, they will feel better about not knowing everything and learning along the way.

5. Celebrate the successes and grow from the mistakes- Your teen is not alone in this; you know their decisions affect you just as much as them. Be happy for their successes and celebrate alongside them, but don’t forget that there is always something to learn and celebrate in mistakes as well. Be conscious about your words and actions when your teen is at a lower point because those moments will help them to move forward and keep going.
